Humanitarian aid during NATO mission
On Tuesday, 14 March 2023 at 10 a.m., the tender "Elbe" is expected back in its home port of Kiel after participating in the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2) "NATO Support Aegean". The crew of the "Elbe" will certainly not forget the last few weeks. After almost five months of deployment in the Aegean, there was another very special mission in the last few weeks. The reason for this was the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The ports of Iskenderun and Mersin in Turkey have been called at unscheduled in recent weeks to help the people affected by the earthquake. Not only relief supplies were delivered to the affected regions. The crew of the Kiel tender also collected small items on board to help the people in need. Many a "marine teddy bear" is now helping a child in Turkey or Syria to find a smile again. The original task of the Kiel unit from the support squadron was to monitor migration movements in cooperation with the Turkish and Greek coastguards. Commander Frigate Captain Berghammer and his crew are now looking forward to being back home.
