The Bonhomme Richard was not the first US Navy ship to fall victim to the flames. Has the navy learnt anything from these incidents?
The amphibious warship USS Bonhomme Richard was formally decommissioned in April. In a four-day fire in July 2020, the 22-year-old ship was so badly damaged that it was not worth repairing, the US Navy determined back in autumn. The cause of the fire is still being investigated. The original suspicion that the fire was deliberately set by a crew member has so far been neither confirmed nor ruled out.
