TKMS expands its workforce

The staff expansion at the TKMS site in Wismar is progressing according to plan. On 5 January 2026, more than 140 new employees took up their posts. This means that TKMS now employs over 400 people in Wismar and is thus continuing to systematically expand the site.

In the coming years, the shipyard will be specifically organised as a hybrid shipyard for underwater and surface projects. Alongside Kiel, Wismar is set to become one of the largest and most efficient TKMS sites in Germany. Spacious areas, sufficient steel production capacities and an efficient infrastructure offer very good conditions for this.

"The increase in personnel is of great importance not only for TKMS, but also for the city of Wismar and the East German coastal region," explains Dr Dirk Steinbrink, Chief Technology Officer at TKMS. "By upgrading our shipyard, we will create up to 1,500 jobs by the end of 2029 if the order situation is right. Our record order book also ensures high capacity utilisation and long-term prospects."

TKMS has been investing extensively in the technical and infrastructural development of the site since the beginning of last year. Investments of over 200 million euros are planned, including the modernisation of the hall infrastructure and the construction of a new production line for submarine construction. Several underwater projects are to be realised in Wismar, including possible option boats of the 212CD type for the German Navy. Parts of a potential F127 frigate project and the research icebreaker "Polarstern" are also planned.

At around 18.2 billion euros, TKMS' order backlog remains at a record level. National and international projects emphasise the good future prospects of the company, which is one of the leading companies in the maritime industry worldwide with around 9,100 employees.
