On Saturday, the Turkish Ministry of Defence announced that a sea mine floating in the Black Sea off the entrance to the Bosporus had been defused.
The mine was discovered by fishermen, as reported by Reuters. Turkish Navy units are currently patrolling the Bosphorus more intensively anyway and have quickly deployed a minehunter to the area. When the object in question was identified as a mine, it was towed to a safe area and detonated. Maritime traffic was able to continue unhindered. The Turkish navy stated that it was an "old type" of ammunition. The minesweeper "Akcay" of the Aydin class was used, a licence built to a design by the German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen - very similar to the German minesweeper Type 332.
At the same time, it became known that a Russian warning message had been issued to the shipping industry, The Ukrainian navy has anchored more than 400 mines near Odessa, Ochakov, Chernomorsk and Yuzhnyy. These are of the Yam and Yarm types. The latter is an anchored naval mine from the Soviet era for shallow water use. The Ukrainian authorities have denied this allegation.
