As announced by the British Ministry of Defence on 7 October 2021, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, Acting First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, will take up the post of Chief of the Defence Staff (supreme military commander and political advisor) on 30 November 2021.
Admiral Radakin's appointment to the post marks the first appointment as Chief of the Defence Staff from within the Royal Navy since May 2003, and he will be succeeded as First Sea Lord by Vice Admiral Ben Key.
