USA - Second aircraft carrier group ordered to the Middle East

The USS "Carl Vinson" (CVN 70) has been re-routed by the Pentagon and has joined the USS "Harry S. Truman" (CVN 75) to continue the fight against the Houthis in Yemen. After a two-month break, the fighting has flared up again as the Houthis have announced that they will resume their operations in the Red Sea.

In March, the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group ended its previous deployment in East Asia in the area of responsibility of the US 7th Fleet and moved to the waters off Yemen. The US is thus significantly strengthening its force projection capabilities in the region. The deployment of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group was also extended by a further month until the end of April, according to the Associated Press.

After a ceasefire was signed in January, the Houthis ceased their attacks and the USA ended its operations in Yemen in return. This agreement expired in March - the USA is now responding with the deployment of two aircraft carrier groups.

The Vinson Carrier Strike Group includes the carrier:

  • the aircraft of the carrier aircraft squadron 2,

  • the guided missile cruiser USS "Princeton" (CG 59, Ticonderoga class),

  • as well as the two guided missile destroyers USS "Sterett" (DDG 104) and USS "William P. Lawrence" (DDG 110) of the Arleigh Burke class.

In recent weeks, the Vinson and her convoy had been in the waters around the Korean peninsula, visited the port of Busan and conducted joint exercises with the South Korean Navy (Republic of Korea) and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force following North Korea's recent missile tests.

The Truman Carrier Strike Group has been deployed in the US 5th Fleet's area of responsibility in the Middle East since December 2024 to support the fight against the Houthis. After a brief port visit to Greece to repair damage caused by a collision with a merchant ship, the USS "Harry S. Truman" is now back in action in the Red Sea.

The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group includes the carrier:

  • the aircraft of the carrier aircraft squadron 1,

  • the guided missile cruiser USS "Gettysburg" (CG 64, Ticonderoga class),

  • as well as the guided missile destroyers USS "Stout" (DDG 55) and USS "Jason Dunham" (DDG 109) of the Arleigh Burke class.

  2. We know it. Not new. 100 years ago it was called gunboat diplomacy. No matter how many the US armed forces cruelly murder, they remain the GOOD guys. This century is the century of double standards.
