Welcome on board - the German Navy at the Hanse Sail 2024

From Friday to Sunday, 9 to 11 August 2024, the gates at the naval base on Hohe Düne will reopen for the "Open Stützpunkt".

It's that time again: Hanse Sail! And what would this traditional event be without the Bundeswehr as an ingredient? But it's not just the navy that is hosting the event, members of the army and air force are also presenting themselves at the Hohe Düne naval base and on the passenger quay in Warnemünde.

"My team and I are proud to once again be one of the crowd-pullers at this major maritime event this year. In particular, the direct dialogue between the soldiers and the guests is one of my personal highlights that I particularly look forward to every year," says frigate captain Lehmann, commander of the naval base.

"Gorch Fock" back on board

The visit of the training sailing ship "Gorch Fock" has been announced as a highlight and visitor magnet. The "white lady" and her crew can represent professionalism and offer guests a unique insight into life on a tall ship. The Gorch Fock serves to represent the Federal Republic of Germany all over the world, but its main task is to provide nautical training for junior officers. The three-masted barque is in Warnemünde for the first time with the new commander, frigate captain Elmar Bornkessel. Frigate "Hessen" also comes to Rostock

At this year's Hanse Sail, the navy is providing a "star contingent": the "Hessen" will be moored at the "Warnowwerft" naval arsenal. The "Hessen" recently made headlines because it was the German contribution to the EU mission Aspides. It repelled several attacks by the Huthi rebels. Previously, the "Hessen" was the flagship and lead ship of Standing Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) in the North and Baltic Seas. Many attractions

In addition to these ships, the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 will also be moored at the naval base. "Parts of the Baltic and North Sea Mine Countermeasures Group in particular, which we will be presenting to guests at the base, are of course always worth a visit. In addition, the army and air force, from the Leopard 2 main battle tank to helicopters for special forces, will also be presenting their weapon systems here at Hohe Düne. And of course much more," says frigate captain Lehmann. But there will not only be something to see during the ship tours, the so-called "Open Ships". At the stand of the Potsdam Motor Transport Training Centre, the soldiers will be offering guests the chance to sit behind the wheel of a truck themselves. Other highlights include demonstrations by the Naval Air Wing 5 from Nordholz. The audience can look forward to a dynamic air show with German Navy helicopters, including a simulated sea rescue in the harbour basin of the base. A "Sea King" with a special livery and a "Sea Lynx" will be used. This will be the last major event for the "Sea King" on its "farewell tour". The helmet divers will also be showing off their skills. Four field kitchens will cook for visitors and the Hanover Army Music Corps will provide the musical backdrop. The family care centre will be looking after the "maritime offspring" with the submarine bouncy castle. Together with the "blue light faction" (THW, federal and water police as well as the fire brigade), this will be an eventful Hanse Sail.

  1. We had a great and interesting day at the army base today. We were able to see various ships and helicopters from the inside, experience air shows and take a ride on various boats. Everywhere we went, we were greeted in a friendly manner by dedicated members of the army and police, who were happy to answer all our questions. Although as a woman I wasn't particularly interested at first, I went home at the end of the day totally thrilled. A big and heartfelt thank you to all the organisers and participants.
