From a press release by the Rostock Naval Command
On Saturday, 17 June 2023, for the eighth time in a row, the "Tag der Bundeswehr" will offer a varied programme of information, talks and presentations at ten locations nationwide from 10 am to 6 pm. This year, Wilhelmshaven will be the only naval location to host the event.
In addition to the German Navy, visitors can also experience the Army and the Air Force live at the Bundeswehr's largest base.
The Einsatzflottille 2 presents itself with two of its ships and thus the largest exhibits that can be marvelled at on this day. The F125 class frigate "Rheinland-Pfalz" and the F124 class frigate "Hessen" invite you to an open ship.
The skills of the naval battalion's shipboard company can be experienced up close in action when they abseil from a flying helicopter onto a frigate during fast roping. The mine divers perform shallow water jumps and are then picked up out of the water by a search and rescue (SAR) helicopter.
The Bundeswehr programme is rounded off by army and air force vehicles. A Leopard 2A7V main battle tank, the 2000 self-propelled howitzer and the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system can be viewed. Visitors can also take a seat in the cockpit of a Tornado fighter aircraft and a CH-53 transport helicopter on "Armed Forces Day" in Wilhelmshaven. On this day, the A400M, one of the Bundeswehr's newest aircraft, will fly over the base.
The Bundeswehr is not the only organisation presenting itself on this day. Under the motto "Rescuers in green", paramedics and the Bundeswehr fire brigade, as well as civilian rescue services, will provide insights into the rescue and treatment of injured people. Children can hand in their injured stuffed animals and dolls for treatment in a specially set up teddy clinic.
Visitors to the Bundeswehr's largest base get to know the diversity of the entire Bundeswehr and have the opportunity to talk to soldiers.
A colourful children's programme and refreshments are of course also provided.
And the "Armed Forces Day" in Wilhelmshaven has even more to offer:
However, those who are at least 17 years old and have German citizenship can experience even more! Young adults can apply to take part in the Talent Scout and have the chance to gain exclusive insights that no other visitor to the day will get. In small groups, those interested will be accompanied around the event site by soldiers and have the chance to ride in a speedboat, extinguish fires and see a real warship from the inside, among other things. Demand for this free highlight is high. However, a few places are still available for the morning.
Will there ever be an aircraft carrier?
