In a broadcast speech to the Norwegian parliament on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the delivery of additional weapons to Ukraine and Oslo to prevent Russian ships from docking in their harbours.
He called for additional weapons and once again emphasised the importance of sanctions to stop Russia. Zelenskyy repeated the accusation that Russia had mined the sea in the Black Sea region, which posed a danger to shipping. "We have no common borders with you, but we have a common neighbour who opposes all our common values," said the Ukrainian president in his introduction to the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.
As the host country of the Nobel Peace Prize, Norway understands what peace means more than any other country, said Zelenskyy. At the same time, the Ukrainian president demanded three things from Norway:
Firstly, no more crowns or euros in taxes should be allowed to reach Russia. Secondly, the European Union, and hopefully Norway, must finally enforce a ban on Russian ships calling at ports on the continent. Thirdly, Norway, as a major energy supplier, should support Europe in moving away from Russian gas. Norway is to supply five billion cubic metres of gas to Ukraine for the next heating season. He hopes that this will lead to long-term cooperation. The Norwegian Prime Minister Store expressed his opposition to the closure of the harbours.
He pointed out that there is great trust in Norway as an energy supplier and that he believes Norway can contribute to better energy security. Zelenskyy also called on Norway to invest in the reconstruction of Ukraine. He lamented that Ukraine was paying a "terrible price" for the invasion and that at least 145 children had lost their lives. Since the Second World War, foreign guests have only been allowed to speak in the Storting twice, emphasised Storting President Masud Gharahkhani - the other time was Winston Churchill in 1948.
