On the night of Easter Sunday, the sea rescue cruiser Pidder Lüng a baby saw the light of day. The crew of the ship stationed on Sylt were woken at two o'clock in the morning. A rescue helicopter was not available. The Danish harbour of Havneby was approached. From there, an ambulance was to take the expectant mother to a hospital in Flensburg. However, during the 25-minute crossing, foreman Holger Speck, himself the father of three daughters, realised that the baby didn't want to wait that long. And as soon as the lines of the Pidder Lüng in Havneby, a healthy baby boy was born at 4.02 am. As 25-year-old mother Lara and her son had coped with the birth perfectly, the ambulance was able to return to Germany without any further ado. The young family then embarked on their first sea voyage together: Both travelled on board the Pidder Lüng back to Sylt. There, foreman Speck and crew members Gerhard Reinfeld and Christopher Kölln handed both over to the overjoyed father.
Since there is no longer a maternity clinic on Sylt, a two-week stay before the expected date of birth is recommended. However, this had not yet been reached in the case of little Bosse. In principle, the DGzRS rescue cruisers are equipped to deal with medical emergencies. However, births on board are very rare. The last time this happened was almost ten years ago on the rescue cruiser at the Amrum station.
The editorial team marine forum wishes parents and son good luck!
