ABB DC power supply for F126

Damen Naval and ABB (a Swedish-Swiss technology company) have signed a contract for the supply of transformers, generators, thruster motors and other onboard systems for the F126 frigates.

This also includes cybersecurity solutions for the four frigates with an option for two more. This is a significant change in the way tomorrow's naval vessels will not only fulfil increasingly complex requirements, but also meet expectations in terms of emissions. For multi-mission capable vessels, a DC system allows the diesel generators to operate at variable speed depending on power. The robustness of the DC grid will enable the German Navy to use as few diesel generators as possible without causing power outages. In addition, the installation of a DC system is a strategic decision, as such systems are also compatible with sustainable energy sources. This gives the German Navy a head start in the integration of new technologies over the life cycle of the ships, according to Damen's press release.

Damen Naval is expected to deliver the first ship to the German Navy in 2028. All construction work will be carried out entirely in Germany at shipyards in Kiel, Hamburg and Wolgast. Damen Naval is building the four F126 class frigates as prime contractor with Blohm+Voss and Thales as partners.
