Arctic sea route revitalised

The Hong Kong-flagged NewNew Star (3,534 TEU) is one of the largest container ships (36,000 tonnes, 231 metres) to have sailed the northern Arctic route to date. It is also one of the first container ships without an ice class and is set to establish a regular liner service to Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg this season. The shipping company with a total of eight ships is the Yangpu NewNew Shipping Company, which also owns the NewNew Polar Bear, which is suspected of having damaged the Balticconnector natural gas pipeline and two underwater telecommunications cables between Estonia and Finland with its anchor in October 2023. The NewNew Star could soon be surpassed by the Panamax ship Flying Fish 1 (4,890 TEU), which also has a permit to sail the Arctic route but is currently still in the Baltic Sea (as of 5 September 2024).
