Federal Public Prosecutor General has begun investigations

The German Federal Public Prosecutor General has launched an investigation into alleged "anti-constitutional sabotage" following reports of leaks from the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which are widely attributed to Russia.

The spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office announced on Monday that an investigation had been initiated against persons unknown. The Federal Public Prosecutor General only gets involved in special cases. In this case, it is a matter that is "likely to jeopardise Germany's internal and external security" and represents a "serious attack on the energy supply", the spokesperson continued. However, final results are not expected in the near future.

Meanwhile, special forces from the Federal Maritime Police and the German Navy have been sent to the suspected crime scene to gather evidence. An underwater drone will probably be used.

Sweden, one of the countries closest to the leaks, sent a submersible to the scene days after the incident.
