14th Armaments Report - Focus on naval helicopters

Last week, the BMVg published its 14th armaments report on the status of major military projects in ongoing procurement as of mid-December 2021. We want to take a look at the projects relevant to the German Navy and start this week with the naval helicopters, specifically the two projects NH90 Naval Transport Helicopter (NTH) SEA LION and NH90 Multi Role Frigate Helicopter (MRFH). In the current armaments report, we read: "The NH90 is a transport and frigate helicopter jointly developed by France, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany. Fire with consequences

How the US Navy is learning lessons from the Bonhomme Richard disaster The fire on the Bonhomme Richard in July 2020 was so devastating that the amphibious ship had to be decommissioned in April 2021 (Marineforum reported) The consequences and lessons learnt from this disaster are apparently more far-reaching than initially assumed. The capabilities for assessing and repairing battle damage are being revised, because what do you need to survive in a war against sophisticated opponents? Rear Adm. Eric Ver Hage, the commander of the Navy's Regional Maintenance Centre, said the Navy is even repairing the burned-out hull of the former amphibious assault ship...

It went wrong

Someone has chosen the wrong enemy, a French ATLANTIQUE maritime patrol aircraft. The Marine Nationale announced that one of its Atlantique 2 MPAs had been shot at with a laser in Brittany. The aircraft used its own sensors to identify and locate the person, who was then apprehended fairly quickly. The incident took place on the evening of 4 January 2022, when the ATL2 was on final approach to the Lann-Bihoué airbase when a madman began targeting the aircraft with a laser. The pilot then aborted the landing. The crew were then able to use their technical resources to...

CONDOR IMS - Authorisation for the guarding of seagoing vessels

Since the end of December 2021, CONDOR International and Maritime Services (CONDOR IMS GmbH) has once again been approved by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) for the guarding of seagoing vessels. This makes the Essen-based company one of the few German pioneers to have successfully completed the procedure for defence against external threats on seagoing vessels. Since December 2013, private security companies wishing to offer armed services aimed at defence against pirates on seagoing vessels flying the German flag have required a BAFA licence, regardless of where they are based. This is carried out in consultation with the Federal Police (BPOL), which is primarily responsible for the specific procedures and...

Fast, faster, naval arsenal

It was often criticised that the corvettes in Warnemünde should have a higher availability. The navy, procurement office and naval arsenal were able to remedy this with an innovative pilot project. In 2020, the pilot project "Immediate Operational Readiness Programme - Immediate Repair Order Navy" was launched on behalf of the Inspector General of the German Armed Forces. The aim was to increase the operational readiness of the corvettes at the Warnemünde base and on deployment. At the same time, a noticeable reduction in the workload of the Naval Arsenal (MArs) was to be achieved in order to be able to better concentrate its own resources on repairs in the workshops. For example, the naval arsenal had to be geographically...
