Sailboat and aircraft carrier - unequal meeting at sea

The news would have been lost in the noise: A Polish single-handed sailor had overlooked the French flagship! Or vice versa - which still needs to be clarified! The sequence of events According to the Préfecture Maritime de Méditerranée (Premarmed), the aircraft carrier CHARLES DE GAULLE was on a training voyage around 40 miles south-east of Toulon in mid-November when a 10-metre sailing yacht was spotted off the bow early in the morning at dusk in wind force 6. But by then it was already too late to take full evasive action. In the unavoidable collision (it couldn't have been more, judging by the pictures), the boat lost...

Ukraine: Even more new recruits for the navy

On the day that British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace visited Ukraine in mid-November and signed an agreement to "develop the capabilities of Ukraine's naval forces", the Ukrainian Navy announced the arrival of two new coast guard boats. The two refurbished ex-ISLAND-class patrol boats of the US Coast Guard, which have been repainted from white to grey, were shipped as deck cargo from Baltimore/USA to Odessa in Ukraine. There are now four boats of the same type from a US delivery from 2019 already stationed there. Frigate Myanmar: An unknown quantity

The navy of the Republic of Myanmar, which is geographically located between India, Bangladesh, Thailand and the People's Republic of China, has been undergoing an extensive fleet renewal programme for several years, which has so far gone almost unnoticed by the Western media. The fleet of the Myanmar Navy is made up of a colourful mix of different units from the USA, Denmark, the former Yugoslavia, India and the People's Republic of China. Maritime experts

Anyone who believes that a ship with modern equipment is a product from northern Germany should take a look at the suppliers from inland areas. The maritime high-tech industry is particularly well represented in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Many companies based in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are considered indispensable and traditionally occupy a central position in the overall structure of the German maritime industry and economy. With an annual turnover of over ten billion euros and more than 60,000 jobs, they generate around 20 per cent of maritime value added in Germany and provide 15 per cent of jobs. It was no coincidence that the 11th National Maritime...

Coastguard and water protection in Chinese

China's second navy becomes seaworthy At the beginning of 2013, China decided to merge four of the five different maritime law enforcement agencies into the China Coast Guard (CCG, long title: Chinese People's Armed Police Force Coast Guard Corps (PAPCGC)). With almost 1,400 units, China has an almost unmanageable fleet of white-painted ships and boats - the world's largest coast guard in terms of vehicles and personnel - for customs tasks, fisheries protection and piracy defence, but above all for enforcing sovereignty claims. And since January 2021, a new coastguard law has been in force that allows the CCG to use lethal force against foreign vessels that fail to comply with requests to enter Chinese waters.
