Singapore: a city state with an impressive navy

Thanks to a prospering economy, small Singapore can afford a sizeable maritime defence force. And it has further ambitions. The island city-state of Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia in terms of area. The multi-ethnic state - officially known as the Republic of Singapore - has an area of 734.3 square kilometres. It has a population of around 5.9 million and is economically and technologically advanced. With a per capita gross domestic product of around USD 133,000 in 2023, Singapore ranks third in the world. Russia's Black Sea Fleet on the defensive

Compared to Russia, Ukraine is a military dwarf. Nevertheless, the country managed to paralyse a once powerful fleet without warships. While Russia's offensive in the Ukrainian war on land continues unabated and is fought there in fierce attacks and counterattacks, the Ukrainian naval forces have only been able to thwart the offensive of the Russian Black Sea Fleet by deploying mobile missile batteries, drones and surface drones, keeping them away from the Ukrainian coasts and forcing them onto the defensive. Since 2023, the Ukrainian naval forces have even gone on the offensive. This indicates fundamental changes and new conceptual approaches to naval warfare in a new era.

According to the Singapore Ministry of Defence, four offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) have been ordered for the Singapore Navy from the Fassmer shipyard in Berne on the Weser. Paper fleet sunk

The KÖLN class was followed in the German Navy by the BREMEN class, also known as class 120 and 122. But where was the frigate 121? The navy decommissioned the last of its eight very successful workhorses of class 122 (BREMEN class) at the end of 2022.
