The fight against drug smuggling: a worthwhile mission in the Caribbean

The HNLMS Holland has only been in the Caribbean since May, but the results are already impressive. At the end of last week, the crew was able to stop drug smugglers twice from bringing their valuable cargo to the USA. In the first case, a suspicious speedboat was discovered on Friday. As it did not stop despite radio calls, the two Dutch fast response boats were launched. Although they were able to catch up with the smuggler boat, they were initially unable to bring it to a halt. Only targeted shots at the outboard engines of the fleeing go-fast put an end to the pursuit. At...

More Scotland is hardly possible

A few fair weather clouds drift leisurely across the sky in the north of the UK as Lady Alison Johnstone enters the small speaker's platform. She is President of the Scottish Parliament and godmother of HMS Spey, which is being commissioned on this day. Japan-US co-operation in the Pacific

The Japanese landing ship Shimokita was able to train with US units for two days. In the Philippine Sea, the 8900-ton displacement Osumi-class ship joined the Americans to practice various manoeuvres and procedures on a binational level. On the first day, the lead ship, the USS America, conducted cross-deck transfers with the V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and tactical manoeuvres. A hovercraft (LCAC) from the USS New Orleans successfully entered the well deck of the Shimokita, and in return the Japanese LCAC made a detour to the USS Germantown. At the end, the opportunity for a photex was not to be missed. The three participating US amphibious ships...

Spain's training sailing ship returns after ten months

Sail training ships can also go to sea. The Spanish navy proudly demonstrated this today when the Juan Sebastián de Elcano sailed into Cádiz. After ten months, she completed her 11th circumnavigation of the globe under the watchful eye of King Felipe VI. The sailing ship, which was commissioned in 1928, was accompanied on its final miles by numerous sailing and motor yachts. The Juan Sebastián de Elcano completed this impressive voyage to mark the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe. The voyage included stops at San Julian in Argentina, Punta Arenas in Chile, the US territory of Guam, Samar and Cebu in the Philippines as well as Ternate and Tidore in...
