Varuna 2021 ended

The binational exercise Varuna took place in the Arabian Sea for the 19th time. During the three-day manoeuvres, the French and Indian navies practised joint cooperation and coordination of their activities. Over the years, the exercise has become more and more extensive and the individual actions more and more complex. This year, the focus was on tasks in the areas of air defence and submarine hunting. Flight operations with fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft were practised with the Charles de Gaulle. Tactical manoeuvres, firing at air and sea targets and supply manoeuvres at sea were also carried out. Due to the pandemic, all tasks were carried out in advance exclusively via video...

Incident in the Persian Gulf

Another incident has occurred in the Persian Gulf. On Monday, speedboats belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards approached two American ships to within around 60 metres. According to the US, the crews of the USS Firebolt and the USCG Baranoff had previously repeatedly called on the Iranians to turn away via radio and megaphone. Only after the Firebolt fired warning shots did the Iranian boats move away from the American boats. The incident is not the first of its kind. Time and again, speedboats of the Iranian armed forces approach US warships to within a few metres, sail around them and occupy the weapons on board. Text: mb; Photo: US...

US Coast Guard in the Black Sea

The United States has deployed a Coast Guard cutter to the Black Sea. The USCG Hamilton is the first US Coast Guard vessel to enter the inland sea since 2008. At that time, the USCG Dallas had passed the Bosporus for the second time on its way east. Two US warships had sailed the Black Sea last month on a routine patrol. The Ticonderoga cruiser USS Monterey and the Arleigh Burke destroyer USS Hudner were operating with NATO partners at the time. The Hamilton belongs to the Legend class of the US Coast Guard and was commissioned in December 2014. The 127-metre-long ship displaces around 4500 tonnes....

Tu-142 over the Pacific

Last week, a Tu-142 from Russia's Pacific Fleet practised flying over the sea. During the ten-hour flight, the two crews covered around 8000 kilometres. The focus was on the use of the aircraft far from radar-monitored airspace. According to Russian sources, the Tupolev was accompanied by US Navy F/A-18 fighter jets for some of the flight. The Tu-142 is a long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft based on the Tu-95 long-range bomber, which made its maiden flight in 1952. It is similar in size to the American B-52. text: mb; photo: MoD...

More AN/SPN-50(V) for the US Navy

The US Navy has ordered three more AN/SPN-50(V) radar systems from the manufacturer Saab. This is an option from the contract concluded in October last year, under which two devices have already been ordered. The price is quoted at just under 32 million dollars. The systems are to be delivered by the end of 2022. The new sensors are intended to replace the AN/SPN-43Cs currently installed on the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships. These 2D radars are used for air traffic control around the ships and detect aircraft at a distance of up to 50 nautical miles and an altitude of up to 50 metres.
