Bremen - DGzRS celebrates the birthday of selfless help

The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) was founded in Kiel on 29 May 1865 and, over the past 160 years, has laid the foundations for a sustainable, donation-financed and therefore independent sea rescue service in Germany with selfless helpfulness, constantly renewed rescue equipment and good organisation. Until the middle of the 19th century, these conditions did not exist in the North and Baltic Seas. However, the idea of a uniform, independent organisation that rescues people from distress at sea regardless of the person or cause finally prevailed. It was a long way from the rowing lifeboat to the rescue cruiser and thanks to the great support from...

North Sea - Ship rams Dutch wind turbine

Two crew members on board the "Glomar Venture" (built in 1990, Panama flag) had been injured while travelling on the North Sea. It was later reported in the Dutch media that the ship had collided with a wind turbine. A lifeboat took the two injured people on board and handed them over to an ambulance in Den Helder. The ship was carrying 640 containers, some of which were carrying an unspecified "dangerous cargo". The authorities called on people to stay away from washed-up containers and warned fishermen not to approach the scene of the accident. The ship sank with...

Hamburg - Hapag-Lloyd reports slump in shipments

Hapag-Lloyd customers have cancelled 30 per cent of shipments from China to the US because they were spooked by the trade conflict between the world's two largest economies, a spokesman for the German container shipping group said. Instead, there has been a "massive increase" in demand for products and shipments from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, the spokesperson added. The tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on goods from China have triggered a trade conflict that had led to 145% US tariffs on Chinese goods and 125% Chinese tariffs on US goods. It remains to be seen whether the tariff agreement between China and the US that has now been reached will...
