US Navy: Warships on a collision course

It's only a short video, but it's sure to make even the most hardened sailor look up: Two warships in immediate need of manoeuvring! In early December, a situation arose in San Diego Bay in which the 16,000-tonne dock landing ship LSD 49 "USS Harpers Ferry" and the destroyer DDG 92 "USS Momsen" were on a collision course. A swift evasive manoeuvre by the destroyer resolved the situation before the much more inert amphibious craft could show any discernible reaction. Now the superior authorities in the U.S. Pacific Fleet are once again dealing with navigational safety on board. To experience - and learn. Video...

Automated kite system as a wind-assisted auxiliary drive

The French company Airseas is trialling an automated kite system for the first time on board a commercial ro-ro cargo ship as propulsion support during an Atlantic crossing. The aim is to validate the design concept and optimise subsystems during ongoing sea operations. Airseas as an offspring of Airbus Airseas was spun off from the industrial giant Airbus in 2015 and has since utilised its specific experience in aviation technology to develop a sailing kite that can be used as a wind propulsion system for large merchant ships. The concept is for the full-size version of the Seawing, a 1000 m2 parafoil, to fly at altitudes of almost 1,000 feet (300 metres), where it captures the more stable high-altitude winds to...

Both units departed from Kiel in July of this year for different areas of operation. While the minehunting boat "Sulzbach-Rosenberg" travelled to the eastern Mediterranean, the tender "Mosel" remained in the Atlantic coast off the Iberian Peninsula for the first time. But in these times, plans can change quickly. The 45-strong crew of the "Sulzbach-Rosenberg" also had to learn this. Prepared for warm temperatures in the Mediterranean, they were ordered by NATO to return to the...
