Now the Defence Committee has also approved the project in its last meeting before the summer break. Eckhard Rehberg, budget policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, was delighted: "Today, the Budget Committee discussed 27 proposals totalling 19 billion euros for important Bundeswehr procurement and development projects and released the funds." Due to the pandemic-related situation, the departure took place in private and without ceremony. The commander of the 1st Corvette Squadron, Frigate Captain Florian Feld (45), explained: "It was with a heavy heart that we decided to take this step. However, the safety of all involved has the highest priority".
In addition to the German blue helmets, ships and boats from Brazil, Greece, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Turkey are also involved in the UN mission in the Mediterranean. The main task of the marines will be maritime surveillance. This also includes co-operation with the Lebanese authorities and training the Lebanese navy in coastal protection. Since the beginning of the year, the entire naval unit has been under the German command of Flotilla Admiral Axel Schulz.
At the end of October, the "Bravo" crew will be relieved by the "Charlie" crew and return to Warnemünde. The corvette "Braunschweig", on the other hand, will remain in the eastern Mediterranean.
