Russia's LNG projects make progress despite sanctions

Russia's largest producer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Novatek, has completed the first line of its "Arctic LNG 2" project despite US and EU sanctions. The first LNG deliveries are scheduled to be shipped in the first quarter of 2024. PROFILE Arctic LNG 2 will have three production strings that can produce a total of 19.8 million tonnes per year. Each line will therefore have a capacity of 6.6 million tonnes. The other two production lines are expected to go into operation by 2026. Special feature: each production line will not be firmly founded in the permafrost, as is usually the case, but will be floating on gravity-based structures (GBS) in the Gulf of Ob....

Seabird of the year 2024: the red-throated diver

Every year since 2014, the "Jordsand Association for the Protection of Seabirds and Nature" from Ahrensburg (Stormarn district) has chosen a seabird species that exemplifies a particular problem. In 2024, it is the red-throated diver, which, like many other seabirds, is particularly threatened by the numerous wind turbines in the sea. Red List The red-throated diver is the smallest representative of the loon species and is listed as critically endangered as a migratory bird species in Germany. The intensive expansion of offshore wind power over the past ten years has been a "serious burden" for the red-throated diver, as it has to avoid wind farm areas within a radius of around ten kilometres...

Norway: Will offshore gas deposits remain unutilised?

At the end of 2022, there were over 80 gas discoveries off the Norwegian coast covering an estimated area of more than 1.2 billion square metres. Although many of these deposits have considerable value potential, it is highly uncertain how much natural gas can actually be extracted, according to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD). The challenges cited by the NPD include complex deposits and high production costs. Around two thirds of the country's gas reserves have not yet been extracted. And although production is expected to remain high over the next five years, it is expected to decline "quite rapidly" thereafter, according to the authority. Therefore, it makes...

Hamburg: Hapag-Lloyd plans sailing container ships

The Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd says it is working on plans for cargo ships with sail propulsion. Specifically, this involves container ships with a length of around 260 metres and a capacity of 4,500 containers. A total of eight masts will be distributed between the container stacks, four on the port side and four on the starboard side. The sails will be pulled out of the mast like a roller blind (furling main) and set automatically from the deck. This means that a ship planned in this way will have more sail area than the German Navy's training ship, the "Gorch Fock". In addition, an engine will be installed that can run on green methanol (e-fuel). In the coming months...

Nordholz: World's most modern helicopter simulator handed over

A dream birthday "I had a dream," said Captain Broder Nielsen, Commander of the Naval Aviation Command in Nordholz, at the ceremonial handover of the simulator for the NTH Sea Lion from CAE to the German Navy on 14 December. The creation of the world's most modern simulator for helicopters turned out differently than he had dreamed, but was nevertheless a day of great joy. "We have put up with three decades of deficits," he said, and now this result is "top notch". The state-of-the-art flight simulator centre is also attractive for young people who want to choose the navy and aviation. Relieved,...
