New ocean-going tugs for the navy

It can be a little faster sometimes! On 10 November last year, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved 24 million euros to find an interim solution for sea tugs. On 26 November, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) published a tender for the "purchase of two used, market-available ocean-going tugs". Two ocean-going tugs were sought to "tow ships with a full load of up to 21,000 tonnes in sea area A3 to safe harbour." Denmark: Hull Vane for OPV NORDSØEN

At the beginning of May 2023, the Hvide Sande shipyard on the Danish west coast handed over the first offshore patrol vessel (OPV) to the Danish Fisheries Agency. It was delivered with azimuth propulsion nacelles and in combination with a guide plate (hull vane) under the stern. A hull vane smoothes out the turbulence behind a moving ship and makes it faster and quieter, i.e. more efficient. At the same time, the sea behaviour is improved. For the development and function of a hull vane, see the article "Netherlands: Hull Vane for the GRONINGEN" from 12 February 2023. Objectives In the public tender, emphasis was placed on low life cycle costs and energy efficiency. Hvide Sande Shipyard therefore already cooperated with...

Submarine on the Rhine near Bonn and Koblenz - U17 on its way to Speyer

In mid-May, there will be a rare spectacle on the Rhine from Cologne via Bonn and Koblenz: A decommissioned German Navy submarine is on its way from Kiel on the Baltic Sea to Speyer on the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is the U17 - an almost 50 metre long type 206A naval submarine that displaces around 500 tonnes when submerged. However, it will not be travelling through the Rhine itself, but will be transported on a floating pontoon from Kiel to Speyer in Rhineland-Palatinate. There it will be refurbished at the Technik Museum Speyer and is expected to be transferred to the Technik Museum Sinsheim a year later.
