Drones monitor sulphur emissions in the Baltic Sea

Remotely piloted aircraft will be used to search for ships that do not comply with the sulphur limits in the region. The project, carried out by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) together with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, is a continuation of similar projects that EMSA has carried out in this area. Over the next three months, a drone will measure the sulphur content in the exhaust plumes of ships travelling through the Baltic Sea. The "sniffer" will be able to detect any breaches of the applicable limit values. At the same time, image data will also be collected for hydrographic surveying. The remote-controlled aircraft will take off from the Staberhuk military base...

Offshore wind power accident

Following the failure of an offshore wind turbine at a Danish offshore wind farm, offshore wind power developer Orsted is asking the relevant authorities to set up "no-entry zones" at some of its offshore wind farms. As Orsted announced on Wednesday, a rotor and three blades came loose from the nacelle of one of the offshore wind turbines at its 400-megawatt Anholt offshore wind farm and fell into the sea. No people were injured in the accident. However, as a precautionary measure, Orsted is asking the authorities to set up temporary exclusion zones at other wind farms where the same turbines as the one that failed are located. The Anholt offshore wind farm was commissioned in 2013 and consists of 111 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with 3.6 MW. Other farms,...

Harpoon for Ukraine?

With the visit of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to Kiev on 9 March 2022, it became known that the United Kingdom's future arms deliveries will also include sea-based missiles. Since then, the Harpoon ship-to-ship missile system has been discussed in the media as an option. The press release from 10 Downing Street published on 9 April speaks more neutrally of a "new 'anti-ship' missile system". A reason for marineforum to look at the plausible possibilities. Considerations The premise in a variant check is, firstly, that it should be a British weapon system in order to avoid possible reservations on the part of the country of manufacture. In the case of Harpoon, this aspect could presumably be avoided due to the...
