Baltic Sea 'Hop and Go' of a Russian Navy task force

The departure of three warships from the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet from the Baltic Sea before the St. Petersburg Navy Day, which came as a surprise to Western observers, is causing speculation. The nuclear-powered submarine "Tambov" (Victor III class), the Udaloy-class destroyer "Admiral Levchenko" and the landing ship "Ivan Green" left the Baltic Sea on 14 July, although their participation in the Russian Navy Day parade in St. Petersburg had been announced. Previously, the submarine and the destroyer had been observed heading south in the Great Belt on 6 July, at that time accompanied by the ice-capable ocean-going tug "Nikolay Chiker". When the trio entered the Western...

Indo-Pacific task force: We are very prominently recognised

Marineforum conducted an interview with Flotilla Admiral Axel Schulz, commander of Flotilla 2, also CTG 500.01 and thus commander of the German Navy's Indo-Pacific task force. The Navy's IPD24, Pacific Waves 24, has completed its first third. With the start of RIMPAC, the project is entering another, operationally more demanding phase. How do you rate the journey so far? All I can say is: "Once in a Lifetime"! A great endeavour. And I am proud and happy to be able to lead this organisation. I would like to avoid stringing together superlatives, but the hospitality in Halifax was outstanding as always, and the opportunity to be in the parade line-up for the...

Sea trials of China's "Fujian"

China proudly claims that its new aircraft carrier is the largest conventionally powered warship in the world On 23 June, a noteworthy report from the "China Morning Post" arrived in the mailbox: China claimed the title of having the largest conventional aircraft carrier design in the world and immediately published a few references to the "Fujian". The state broadcaster focussed in particular on the electromagnetic catapult. Something had been achieved on a conventionally powered ship that was thought to be impossible. The Chinese emphasised that this was unique. Well, the US Navy can do this with the Ford-class, but this is known to be nuclear-powered and can therefore be sufficiently...

Kieler Woche: Follow-up Russian activities

At the end of last week, unusual movements by the Russian navy and Russian state vessels were once again observed right on the doorstep of Kiel Bay in the Fehmarnbelt. On 22 June 2024, the Russian oil tanker (RFS) "Yaz" and the Steregushiy-class corvette RFS "Stoikiy" passed through the Fehmarnbelt in the direction of St. Petersburg. The corvette had previously passed the Danish Straits heading north from the Baltiysk naval base on 19 June 2024. It was assumed that the RFS "Stoikiy" was deployed to protect the oil tanker RFS "Yaz", which was approaching the Skagerrak at the time. The tanker "Yaz" left Tartus (Syria) at the end of May...

40 ships and boats from 16 nations at the 130th Kiel Week!

A dream start! Kiel Week has begun with a fantastic turnout of visitors and good summer weather. Over 4,000 international marines populate the Kiel-Wik naval base and the city of Kiel. After the end of the "BALTOPS 24" manoeuvre, many of the 50 participating units arrived in Kiel. These traditionally include the "USS Mount Whitney". Furthermore, the 208m long amphibious dock ship USS "New York", in which 7 tonnes of steel from the rubble of the World Trade Center was used in the foredeck during the construction of the ship. The Colombian Navy's sail training ship "Gloria", which delighted visitors with salsa music and dancing on Saturday, will also be there. Other ships and...
