Figures from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), an organisational unit of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), show an increase in piracy attacks and armed robberies in 2020. Compared to 2019 with 162 pirate attacks, the number rose to 195 in 2020. The IMB Piracy Reporting Centre (PRC) reports that three ships were hijacked and 11 ships were fired upon, 20 attempted attacks were successfully repelled and 161 ships were boarded. The Dutch Navy has been using the Goalkeeper close-range defence system since the early 1990s. What was state-of-the-art at the time is no longer state of the art today.
