Banal airship or "airyacht"?

Airships are a German invention, Count Zeppelin and Hugo Eckener are the great names that have left their mark. Lake Constance and Friedrichshafen will forever be associated with this pioneering era. However, every grandly conceived use of this "giant technology" ended tragically, whether as a weapon of war in the First World War or as a passenger solution in Lakehurst. The USA even used airships as aircraft carriers - perhaps someone will write something about this. The commercial use never materialised either, most recently in 2002 with the insolvency of the Cargolifter company, whose hangar is now a huge adventure swimming park. Otherwise, "blimps" are a joy for paying tourist sightseeing flights (is it actually called "flight"?) or...

Canada helps Ukraine with cargo ships

Support to allow transport of Ukrainian wheat The Canadian government plans to help Ukraine export its stranded wheat to countries where it is urgently needed, its foreign minister said on Monday. Russia has blockaded Ukrainian seaports, stranding dozens of foreign-flagged ships and about 20 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain. This agricultural cargo - primarily wheat - is essential for the food supply of many developing countries, especially in the Middle East and Africa. As the Ukrainian coast of the Sea of Azov is under Russian control and the harbours on the Black Sea are under siege, the...

Russian naval auxiliary ship hit - Russia denies it

Ambiguities as with the frigate "Makarov" Two Ukrainian officials have claimed that another Russian Navy ship has been hit in the Black Sea. Although the incident is still unconfirmed, the recently delivered aid ship "Vsevolod Bobrov" has reportedly been hit by a Ukrainian attack and has caught fire. It is said to be moving slowly towards Sevastopol. Last week, Ukrainian officials also claimed to have scored a hit on the Russian frigate "Admiral Makarov", the most modern surface combatant of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. However, this has not been confirmed and the "Makarov" was reportedly hit as it entered Sevastopol harbour....

ABB DC power supply for F126

Damen Naval and ABB (a Swedish-Swiss technology company) have signed a contract for the supply of transformers, generators, thruster motors and other onboard systems for the F126 frigates. This also includes cybersecurity solutions for the four frigates with an option for two more. This is a significant change in the way tomorrow's naval vessels will not only fulfil increasingly complex requirements, but also meet emissions expectations. For multi-mission capable vessels, a DC system allows the diesel generators to operate at variable speed depending on power. The robustness of the direct current network will enable the German Navy to use as few diesel generators as possible, without having to reduce...
