GORCH FOCK repairs affected by the coronavirus pandemic
Corona-related staff shortages and considerable disruptions in the supply chains will result in the GORCH FOCK being handed over to the German Navy in late summer this year. Lürssen Werft informed the client of this this week. The postponement has no effect on the agreed budget.
Damen Naval and the Hamburgische Schiffbau-Versuchsanstalt (HSVA) have signed a contract for comprehensive cooperation in the field of hydrodynamic optimisation and the implementation of an extensive model test campaign for the new Class 126 frigates. Until now, the German Navy base in Kiel has also been known as Tirpitzhafen. Now this name is to disappear and the site will officially be known as the Kiel-Wik naval base. Other incriminating names are also to be replaced by names that commemorate neutral persons or persons associated with the German resistance. The Scheermole will thus become the Oskar Kusch Mole. This is to honour First Lieutenant Oskar Kusch, a submarine commander during the Second World War, who attracted attention in the navy because of statements critical of the regime and was executed on the firing range in Kiel-Holtenau in 1944. The Tirpitzmole also loses its name and is to be named after the poet Gorch Fock.

Minehunting boat "Datteln" returns to its home port of Kiel after three months of NATO deployment. The boat was part of one of NATO's two standing mine countermeasures groups, the "Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1", or SNMCMG 1 for short. The crew will hand over the baton to its sister boat "Sulzbach-Rosenberg", which will leave Kiel one day later on Thursday, 15 April 2021 and rejoin the NATO group as a new German contribution. A freighter flying the flag of Sierra Leone was inspected by the Berlin boarding team in recent days. The ship was on its way from Turkey to a Libyan harbour. During the search, the crew of the freighter was co-operative and no weapons or other prohibited items were found on board.
