The signs of the past few months suggested a failure. Now the German-Norwegian submarine project U 212 CD is reaching the finishing line. The Norwegian Ministry of Defence announced on 23 March that the two procurement organisations had reached an agreement with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems on the contract for the class to be developed on a binational basis. In the coming years, the new NH90 NTH helicopters will replace the German Navy's familiar Sea Kings. The naval aviators took delivery of the first examples in mid-2020. Following the decision in summer 2020 to freeze the modernisation of the MPA, an interim solution was envisaged until the Franco-German MAWS (Maritime Airborne Warfare System) project is realised. Abandoning the capabilities for maritime surveillance would lead to a massive loss in independent situation analysis. Added to this is NATO's highly prioritised submarine hunting capability, which significantly strengthens Germany's contribution to the protection of sea lanes. Maintaining this capability is therefore of great importance in terms of defence policy.

The task force provider Berlin left Wilhelmshaven on 5 March and is currently on its way to the area of operations. It will soon join the EU Operation Irini and monitor compliance with the arms embargo off the coast of Libya.
