Methanol engines on the rise

Maritime Cluster Northern Germany presents a comprehensive market overview Methanol is well on its way to establishing itself as one of the most important fuel options alongside LNG and ammonia as well as bio-based fuels such as FAME due to its high potential for decarbonising shipping and protecting the environment. Decisions by major market players such as Maersk and X-Press Feeders to use methanol in new ships support this development. A few years ago, engines that could process methanol were virtually non-existent. Now, however, established engine manufacturers are increasingly opening up to this fuel and actively tapping into this market. In addition, there are more and more engines that are being retrofitted or are to be...

BUND calls for more protection for the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site

The German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) is calling for better protection of the Wadden Sea in the expansion of offshore wind energy and planned natural gas extraction, particularly in order to preserve the title of "UNESCO World Heritage Site". The protection of the Wadden Sea must be consistently prioritised over economic interests, as the status of the area is severely threatened by exploitation interests. In the last status report from September 2023, the UNESCO World Heritage Commission declared that the extraction of raw materials was incompatible with the Wadden Sea's World Heritage status. UNESCO had therefore called on Germany and the Netherlands to refrain from oil and gas extraction in the Wadden Sea and its immediate surroundings. BUND demands...

New federal strategy promotes port expansion for wind energy

Federal government adopts port strategy and commits to expanding the port of Cuxhaven The federal government has adopted the long-awaited national port strategy. As part of this, the federal government has now also committed to making a financial contribution to the most important transshipment centre for onshore and offshore wind energy in Germany. This is an important signal for Cuxhaven, the local port industry and, above all, for the energy transition in Germany. Cuxhaven, 25 March 2024 - Cuxhaven is the only coastal location in Germany that has the heavy-duty port areas required for loading parts of wind turbines. It is also the only coastal location that can offer this at short notice.
