Pipeline for Rügen liquefied natural gas terminal fully approved

The responsible mining authority in Stralsund has approved the second section and thus the entire 50 km long connection pipeline between the gas pipeline hub in Lubmin - east of the city of Greifswald - and Mukran in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen. The pipeline will transport the liquefied natural gas delivered by ship to Mukran, where it will be regasified on so-called "FSRUs", to the hub in Lubmin, from where it will be fed into the long-distance gas pipeline network. FSRU stands for Floating Storage and Regasification Unit. Two of these units are planned in Mukran: The "Neptune", which is currently still moored off Lubmin, and the "Transgas Power", which will be...

Environmentally friendly fuels - healthier, but not more climate-friendly

Since 1 January 2020, the entire shipping industry has become "greener" thanks to "Sulphur 2020" At the turn of 2020, the IMO banned cheap but dirty heavy fuel oil with a high sulphur content. The shipping industry had two options to react: Switch to light fuel oil (marine diesel with lower sulphur and heavy metal content) or install an exhaust gas purification system (scrubber). The majority of shipowners opted to switch to alternative marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG). The aim of the regulation was to significantly reduce sulphur emissions. The permissible sulphur content of marine fuels was reduced from 3.5 % to 0.5 %. Sulphur emissions (SOx) are held responsible for the development of respiratory diseases and are a component...

System with "conveyor belt" shortens rescue time at sea

LONDON - A new rescue system "pulls" a person who has fallen overboard safely out of the water in less than a minute. During the rescue of a dummy in the harbour, it was demonstrated that the patented "Swift Rescue Conveyer System" from ZELIM works like a conveyor belt and rescues people who have fallen overboard up to four times faster than conventional systems, such as a rescue gallows. During a three-day demonstration around Vattenfall's Ramsgate offshore wind farm off the Thames estuary, offshore search and rescue specialists showed that once the "person overboard" role has been triggered, the Swift rescue device can be lowered into the water remotely and people quickly brought back on board to safety...
