Kongsberg controllable pitch propeller for F126

The new F126 frigates of the German Navy will receive controllable pitch propeller systems with the corresponding hubs, blades, hub covers and propeller shafts from Kongsberg. The company has announced that the general contractor for the construction of the frigate, Damen Naval, has commissioned Kongsberg to supply four sets of controllable pitch propeller systems. The propeller/propeller shaft system is the successful result of close co-operation between Damen Naval, Kongsberg Maritime, the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute and the classification society, according to Kongsberg. Controllable pitch propellers enable sailing speeds (forward and reverse) independent of the engine speed and improve the manoeuvrability of the ship. The propulsion system has a simpler design, while the propeller itself is more complicated. As Kongsberg writes, the four ships...

US Navy decides on installation in front of hypersonic missile

The topic of hypersonic weapons is also slowly taking shape in the US Navy! Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has been selected to install the first launch systems for the American missiles in the Zumwalt-class destroyers USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor, according to the Naval Sea Systems Command. The modernisation measures are to be carried out during the next shipyard layovers of the two ships. The work requires not only a suitable dry dock, but also appropriate heavy-lift crane capacity, roofing and specially trained personnel. The reasons for selecting HII suggest that the project is not a trivial one. But you only need to take one look...

Saab Germany opens location in Wilhelmshaven

Saab opened its branch on the Jade, or rather the Ems-Jade Canal, with a ceremony in the new premises on Bunsenstrasse. In future, all maritime projects in Germany will be managed from here. For years, Saab has propagated the idea of operating abroad in strategic co-operation with domestic companies, and is also implementing this here. It is about the future of high-tech products such as sensors, weapons and combat boats. This also means an increase in the number of employees, currently 350 throughout Germany. In Wilhelmshaven there will initially be 4, and then 30 employees. The Lord Mayor of Wilhelmshaven, Carsten Feist, who was present at the ceremony, was...

Schottel drive for the world's first hydrogen tractor

The port of Antwerp-Bruges contains the world's first hydrogen-powered tugboat, as Schottel reports in a press release, which will be equipped with Schottel propulsion systems. The HydroTug was recently launched at the Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon and will start operating in the Belgian port at the beginning of 2023 as one of the cleanest ships in the port's fleet. According to Schottel, the tug's main propulsion system consists of two Schottel SRP 460 rudderpropellers (2,000 kW each) with a propeller diameter of 2.4 metres. With this thruster configuration, the 31 metre long and 12.5 metre wide vessel achieves a bollard pull of around 65 tonnes. The SRP units will be...

Norway's climate decision

Convert old oil and gas fields to green electricity - or close them prematurely! In the current German energy situation, it is worth taking a look at other European countries. In Germany, we should not simply believe that our European partners can supply us with unlimited energy. A look at Norway shows that even supposedly more progressive and independent partners have their difficulties. Norway, the largest oil producer in Western Europe, also wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55 % by 2030 compared to 1990. However, a reduction of only 4.5 % was achieved by 2021, as preliminary official statistics show. Norway's climate minister Espen Barth Eide said...
