Hamburg: The world's leading maritime trade fair is back

After a four-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic, the global shipbuilding industry met again for the 30th SMM (Shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology international trade fair), the world's leading maritime trade fair, in Hamburg (6 to 9 September 2022). The SMM was held under the motto "Driving the maritime transition". The focus was therefore on the maritime energy transition, digital transformation and climate change. Among the approximately 2,000 exhibitors from 100 countries, around 800 companies from Germany alone and around 30,000 visitors were represented at SMM. The patron of the trade fair was Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who emphasised the growing importance of the maritime industry in his video-transmitted opening...

MAN Diesel for the frigate 126

Damen relies on "made in Germany" As the Dutch company announced at the SMM in Hamburg, the propulsion diesel engines for the German Navy's new frigate class 126 are to be supplied by MAN Energy Solutions. The delivery comprises 8 MAN 32/44CR propulsion engines, two for each of the four frigates ordered. There is an option for two more frigates, i.e. four more engines for MAN to build. Whether there is a circulating reserve or replacement engines was not disclosed and it remains unlikely even today. In June 2020, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) finally awarded the construction contract for the...

Rolls-Royce supplies mtu marine gensets for F126

DAMEN Naval and Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division have signed a contract for the supply of 16 mtu diesel gensets for the German Navy's four new F126 frigates. This is DAMEN's first order for mtu diesel gensets for military applications. According to Hein van Ameijden, Managing Director of DAMEN Naval, Rolls-Royce was chosen because its mtu solutions are customised for naval applications. Efficiency, fuel savings and reduced maintenance The on-board power for each F126 frigate is provided by four Series 4000 variable-speed mtu gensets. These high-performance gensets are the most environmentally friendly marine gensets Rolls-Royce has ever produced: they fulfil the requirements of the IMO III...

Kongsberg controllable pitch propeller for F126

The new F126 frigates of the German Navy will receive controllable pitch propeller systems with the corresponding hubs, blades, hub covers and propeller shafts from Kongsberg. The company has announced that the general contractor for the construction of the frigate, Damen Naval, has commissioned Kongsberg to supply four sets of controllable pitch propeller systems. The propeller/propeller shaft system is the successful result of close co-operation between Damen Naval, Kongsberg Maritime, the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute and the classification society, according to Kongsberg. Controllable pitch propellers enable sailing speeds (forward and reverse) independent of the engine speed and improve the manoeuvrability of the ship. The propulsion system has a simpler design, while the propeller itself is more complicated. As Kongsberg writes, the four ships...

US Navy decides on installation in front of hypersonic missile

The topic of hypersonic weapons is also slowly taking shape in the US Navy! Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has been selected to install the first launch systems for the American missiles in the Zumwalt-class destroyers USS Zumwalt and USS Michael Monsoor, according to the Naval Sea Systems Command. The modernisation measures are to be carried out during the next shipyard layovers of the two ships. The work requires not only a suitable dry dock, but also appropriate heavy-lift crane capacity, roofing and specially trained personnel. The reasons for selecting HII suggest that the project is not a trivial one. But you only need to take one look...
