Change of command at the Eckernförde naval base - it doesn't stop....

On Tuesday, 28 September at 10 am, Frigate Captain Oliver Wellinger (39) hands over command of the Eckernförde naval base to Frigate Captain Olaf Oertel (41). The ceremony will be conducted by the new commander of Operational Flotilla 1, Flotilla Admiral Henning Faltin (54).

"There were two dominant topics during my time as commander of the Eckernförde base: The infrastructure, including the construction measures, and the corona pandemic," says frigate captain Wellinger. Around 400 million euros are being invested in the various construction measures at the second-largest naval base with over 4,000 posts. A large proportion of this money will go towards construction measures for the training and technical areas as well as the partial refurbishment of the harbour. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I also had very few personnel available. Despite this, we have been able to maintain operations. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank my soldiers and civilian employees once again for their commitment and motivation," says the outgoing commander.

His successor, Frigate Captain Oertel, was most recently Chief Naval Engineer on the frigate F125 Crew "Delta". "It is both an honour and a pleasure for me to be able to continue to ensure that the Navy's most diverse location is even better equipped to meet the challenges - both current and future - and in particular its personnel," says Frigate Captain Oertel.
