Maritime Cluster Northern Germany calls for support

The work of seafarers on tankers, container ships, cruise ships and fishing vessels is hard and full of privation. Shift work, constant time changes and long periods away from their families make life difficult for seafarers and put them under particular physical and mental strain. That is why the German Lutheran Seamen's Mission Foundation for more humanity in seafaring. It supports the 29 stations of the Seamen's Mission at home and abroad so that they can do good for seafarers.

The Seamen's Mission regularly visits the seafarers on their ships while they are berthed in harbours or during lockage at the Kiel Canal. If the service on board allows, seamen's clubs or hostels offer accommodation and leisure facilities.

At festive times, especially at Christmas, the stress and loneliness on board are particularly difficult for seafarers. At Christmas, the Seamen's Mission therefore regularly gives small gifts and the much sought-after "Christmas on your ear" telephone cards, which seafarers can use to make free phone calls to their relatives back home. The German Lutheran Seamen's Mission Foundation has been supporting this campaign during the Advent and Christmas period for over ten years with a thousand euros per station.

"The seafarers on the ships were and still are particularly affected by the global coronavirus regulations. Shore leave is still often not possible, and isolation on board has increased with all its consequences. Some of the rules in Europe are being relaxed again, but the coronavirus pandemic is far from over in many other countries around the world. The Seamen's Mission looks after seafarers from many different nations at its stations. This Christian welfare work should definitely be supported," says Knut Gerdes, Chairman of the Board of the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany.

The MCN e. V. asks for a donation for the mission.
