The Australian destroyer Sydneyhas fired an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) for the first time. The ship is currently in the Hobart-class for Combat System Trials off the American coast.
The HMAS Sydney is the third and final ship in the class and was commissioned in May 2020. Its design is based on the F 100 type from the Spanish shipyard Navantia. With a length of 142 metres, the ships displace around 7000 tonnes. They are equipped with the American Aegis system and armed with up to 48 SM-2 missiles and eight Harpoons.
