German government orders four more submarines!

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems receives order extension in the 212CD programme

The German Bundestag and the Federal Government yesterday voted by a majority in favour of the procurement of the option boats in the German-Norwegian submarine programme.

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has received one of the largest orders in the company's recent history with this comprehensive order extension in the current 212CD programme. The President of the Bundeswehr Procurement Office Annette Lehnigk-Emden and CEO Oliver Burkhard officially signed the contract in Koblenz following parliamentary approval. The agreement originally concluded with thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in July 2021 initially included the manufacture and delivery of six identical submarines, two for Germany and four for Norway. With the contractual extension by an additional four boats for the Bundeswehr and Norway's current intention to order a further two option boats, six submarines of the new type could be available to both NATO partners in the future.

Defence cooperation between Germany and Norway

Norway has also already signalled its intention to increase the number of submarines. Oliver Burkhard emphasises the importance of the expansion of the German order: "The turnaround has finally arrived in the maritime sector. We are delighted about the trust that the German government has once again placed in us with the additional order for the world's most modern conventional submarine. We are making a decisive contribution to the turnaround and strengthening defence capabilities with this strategically important project between Germany and Norway." "The cooperation with our Norwegian partner will provide our two armed forces with new opportunities for deployment in the context of national and alliance defence, particularly on NATO's northern flank. In addition, we will enable the German Navy to fulfil its requirements as part of the Navy 2035+ vision. The U212 CD project is another prominent example of how we are able to meet the requirements of the new era in procurement," said Lehnigk-Emden at the signing of the contract.

An important milestone in the project for this class of boat was successfully completed last summer with the Critical Design Review (CDR), the finalisation of the design, which formed the basis for the subsequent start of production in September 2023. This technical basis for the construction of all U212CD class boats has already been adapted to the requirements of the current threat situation. The delivery of the six German submarines is planned annually for the period 2032 to 2037, and the Class 212CD submarines are a new generation that goes well beyond the current Class 212A. With enhanced capabilities in the area of situational awareness, extended networkability with allied units and a reduced signature, the new submarines place new demands on production, and not just because of their size,
but also require state-of-the-art production lines for shipbuilding equipment with high-tech systems. thyssenkrupp Marine Systems also ensures synergies for the operation, logistics and international maintenance of the 212CD submarines, which was also emphasised by the laying of the foundation stone for new service shipyard capacities in Norway. In this way, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is also helping to consolidate its partnership with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA), which has been in place since 2017, and to expand its industrial partnerships in Norway and Germany.
