Frigate "Hessen" joins US carrier organisation

Today, on 5 September 2022, the frigate "Hessen" is leaving its home port to join the US Carrier Strike Group (CSG) under the command of Frigate Captain Volker Kübsch. Together with the American aircraft carrier "USS Gerald R. Ford", the German frigate will primarily operate within the air defence unit and is an integral part of the aircraft carrier group. Operational cooperation focuses on operational training and practising threat scenarios.

Cooperation with the US Navy is already a long tradition for the Class 124. It began in 2009, when the "Hessen" practised with the "USS Dwight D. Eisenhower" off the east coast of the USA. In 2010, the "Hessen" was part of the battle group around the aircraft carrier "USS Harry S. Truman". During this operation, she was under American command as part of Carrier Strike Group Eight (CSG 8). In 2018, the "Hessen" was again part of an aircraft carrier group with the "USS Harry S. Truman". The sister ship "Hamburg" also looks back on this experience, having been integrated into a US carrier group in 2013.

The planned port visits have been announced for Reykjavik, Norfolk and Halifax. The ship and its crew are expected to return to Wilhelmshaven in mid-November.
