"Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania" leaves to join the NATO organisation

On Wednesday, 4 January 2023 at 10 a.m., the frigate "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" departs from Wilhelmshaven on a NATO mission. Right at the beginning of the new year, the ship will once again be part of the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), as it was last year, and will be deployed with it on the so-called northern flank in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and North Atlantic. Under the command of frigate captain Hendrik Wißler, the ship will serve for six months as the flagship of the new German commander of the NATO organisation.

The VJTF, known as the NATO spearhead, is part of the NATO Response Force (NRF) with up to 40,000 soldiers. With the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, NATO can react quickly and flexibly to security policy developments. The Bundeswehr also participates in the VJTF and thus makes an important contribution to national and alliance defence. The "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" will leave its home port of Wilhelmshaven with a crew of around 210 servicewomen and men. In addition to the Commander Task Group (CTG), Flotilla Admiral Thorsten Marx (54), and his 20-strong staff, an on-board helicopter component of Naval Air Wing 5 from Nordholz with two Sea Lynx MK 88A and an on-board dental team are also embarked on the ship.

The German Navy continuously participates in the four multinational NATO naval units that have been available for decades and with which the alliance can operate flexibly in the event of crises or conflicts. Two of the units are capable of protecting large areas of sea lanes, while the other two specialise in defending against sea mines.
