Repair of naval vessels in Bremerhaven

Bredo Dry Docks in Bremerhaven can look back on a long tradition of repairing naval vessels.

The shipyard developed from IVG Schiffs- und Motorenreparaturwerk, which was founded in 1957 and renamed Motorenwerke Bremerhaven in 1962. MWB was created from this in 1994. The company was already servicing and repairing naval vessels of all types, from speedboats to frigates. MWB's ship technology division was merged with Rickmers Lloyd Dockbetrieb in 2013 to form German Dry Docks. This included four of its own docks in Bremerhaven and a co-operation with the Lloyd shipyard for two further large docks. Between 2013 and 2016, the shipyard refurbished numerous naval vessels, including class 130 corvettes, class 122 and 123 frigates and class 702 task force supply vessels. The LÜBECK frigate was refurbished in 2019, and Bremerhaven-based Stahlbau Nord, a sister company of Bredo, participated in the construction project for three Meko A-200 frigates for Egypt as a shipyard partner of TKMS. In 2020, Bredo Dockgesellschaft, Mützelfeldtwerft Cuxhaven and German Dry Docks finally merged to form Bredo Dry Docks, a shipyard network with eight large docks in Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven. In 2021, the class 125 frigate BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG moved to the Bredo shipyard for initial maintenance.
