Autonomous warfare: joint exercise between Australia, the USA and the UK

Over the next 11 days, Australia, in co-operation with the United States and the United Kingdom, will conduct joint exercises at sea and test the latest autonomous warfare technologies at its naval school HMAS Creswell.

This Royal Australian Navy (RAN)-led exercise will test and evaluate unmanned, robotic and autonomous systems in Jervis Bay, the nearby Eastern Australian Training Area and in the sky. Exercise Autonomous Warrior 2022 (AW22) is the setting for a simulated next-generation naval battlefield. The exercise will involve around 300 people from 40 organisations from the three countries mentioned and will test cutting-edge technologies to tackle new maritime security challenges.

The two-week exercise will test around 40 autonomous systems and technologies in a series of carefully designed and planned simulations covering maritime, littoral, air and land operations. The simulated operations will demonstrate capabilities such as mine defence, survey, surveillance, reconnaissance, undersea warfare, force protection, interoperability and interchangeability. The exercise will not only test the capabilities of autonomous ships, aircraft and vehicles, but also advanced command and control technologies. These will be used to receive, process and present data from multiple systems in order to make command decisions and control the actions of the autonomous systems.

AW22 is the latest in a series of similar exercises and demonstrations and is designed to facilitate the Ministry of Defence's ongoing collaboration with allies, partners and industry in the development, evaluation and procurement of unmanned, robotic and autonomous capabilities. The Autonomous Warrior exercise ends on Friday 27 May 2022 and was last held on this scale in Creswell in 2018. During the pandemic, smaller demonstration exercises were held at other locations.
