Modernisation of the F124 class frigates

New "KORA" electronic warfare system commissioned

The Bundeswehr Procurement Office has commissioned the delivery and integration of new systems for electronic warfare (EloKa) on the Sachsen-class frigates (F124).

After a total service life of more than 40 years, the German Navy's previous standard EloKa system "FL 1800S-II" will be replaced on some units. The systems of this type on the F124 class frigates will be replaced by systems from the "KORA" system family from Rohde & Schwarz. To support the deployment of the three on-board systems, three further shore-based systems are being procured for training, maintenance and test operations.

"KORA 40" is an electronic warfare system that has also been commissioned for the F126 class frigates and a previous version of which has already been installed on the F125 class frigates (see photo). With its high sensitivity and long range, the system detects, identifies and tracks complex radar emissions and communication signals over a wide bandwidth. It thus provides a comprehensive situational picture of the relevant electromagnetic spectrum of the environment and increases the early warning capability of the entire frigate system. Similar to the FL1800S-II system, the electronic countermeasures system integrated in KORA 40 also enables targeted jamming and deception of approaching radar-guided missiles for self-protection.

The shore facilities are expected to be operational from 2026, and the subsequent conversion of the ships with the corresponding on-board systems is expected to be completed by 2030.
