On Monday, 26 September 2022, Frigate Captain Lars Petersen (53) handed over command of the naval base in Kiel to Frigate Captain Jan Dobberstein (45).
Petersen has been in charge of the naval base command with the naval harbour "Kiel-Wik" and around 250 soldiers and employees since September 2019. "Being the commander of this special naval base, in my home town of all places, was an infinite stroke of luck for me. In addition to the many encounters with people from Kiel and the surrounding area, the return of the 'Gorch Fock' and Kiel Week 2022 were very special moments for me. After three years, I am leaving with a lot of melancholy but with the good feeling that, despite the immense challenges during the pandemic, I have contributed to bringing society, the city of Kiel and the navy closer together. Serving in the "Sailing City" was a special pleasure and honour for me." Petersen will work for NATO in Brussels in the future.
For Frigate Captain Dobberstein, it is a return to the coast: "I am extremely pleased that after many years in assignments outside the navy and multinational areas, I will find my new duty home in the navy again. During my induction, I have already had the opportunity to get to know the capable military and civilian staff and the special team spirit of the Kiel base command."
The naval harbour in Kiel, also known simply as "the Wik", is a location with a future. Construction and modernisation work has been underway for several years, as can be seen from the scaffolding, excavators and construction vehicles. The main watch, pier facilities, accommodation and mess buildings as well as staff and office rooms are being repaired or newly built. The renovation of the officers' quarters, which can be seen from the Kiellinie, the main guardhouse and the construction of a new mess and canteen building are in full swing.
