In the late morning of 29 August 2024, a fire broke out on one of the diesel generators on board the frigate HNLMS "Evertsen" (144 metres, 6000 tonnes) for reasons as yet unknown. The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated. A spokesperson for the navy told marineschepen.nl on 30 August 2024 that there was only damage to the insulation of the exhaust pipe and that the diesel itself was undamaged.
HNLMS "Evertsen" is an air defence and command frigate of the "De Zeven Provinciën" class and was the fourth and last ship to enter service in 2005. The ship was undergoing maintenance and modernisation work at the shipyard in the naval port of Den Helder. The limited damage is good news for the Dutch navy, which is also short of ships and personnel.
