Olpenitz - Your home harbour

Legend and memories - a call!

With the development of the German Navy, suitable bases were needed whose location would support the defence of the Baltic Sea approaches. The choice fell on the Noor near Olpenitz, which was separated from the Schlei from 1959 to 1964 and given an entrance into the Baltic Sea.

From 1966 to 2006, the harbour was a base for the fast patrol boat and minesweeper squadrons. There were also workshops, a signalling station and flats in Ellenberg for the soldiers' families. At times, around 2000 soldiers and 450 civilians served here.

The naval base, like the armoury in Ellenberg, was a major economic factor for the region. While some found a home here and settled down, conscripts in particular were not impressed by the remoteness. The nickname "Olpesibirsk" is legendary. The traditions of the site, which has now been transformed into a holiday resort, are in danger of being forgotten.

When we look at the achievements in our naval history, we also look at the people who served at the Olpenitz naval base. Whether at sea, on the mine countermeasures units, fast patrol boats, supply vessels or ashore - everyone contributed to ensuring defence capabilities in the Baltic Sea region and beyond and to maintaining peace. Today, hardly anything reminds us that thousands of people from all over Germany served in Olpenitz over the years.

We, the members of the MOV, as a community of values, do not want to bury the seamanship, camaraderie and the small and large services to our country that are practised in Olpenitz in the Olpenitz sand.

But rather: We want to work together with people who called Olpenitz their home port to preserve what is good about it. So come and talk to us, send us your pictures and memories or become part of a small combat community that is committed to maintaining the culture of remembrance for Olpenitz. Let the younger generation of servicemen and women or people on holiday at the former naval base share in the experiences that connect you with Olpenitz.

  1. However, I just happened to find the call regarding Olpenitz. As one of the former Kdre, I am interested, especially as I was in this (in my opinion unsightly) holiday resort at the beginning of October.
Has there been any response to your initiative so far?

    • Nice to read from you Mr Admiral. There are already some comments from alumni "all ranks" on the social media channels. There are not yet any contributions in the form of stories, people or pictures. But initial reactions show me that we have struck a nerve. "Olpesibisrsk" brings back memories. You could certainly write a full-length story...

  2. Why does the NIT speak for all MOV members?

    • NIT members are on the MOV board and initiated this. Nobody officially "speaks" for anyone. It's just meant to be fun. So I don't understand your question.
