Sail Bremerhaven: Open Ship on the "Gorch Fock" and "Bayern"

Wilhelmshaven - Under the motto: "The world is coming to Bremerhaven - and you are right in the middle of it", the city of Bremerhaven will be celebrating Sail 2025 from 13 August 2025 to 17 August 2025, with the frigate "Bayern" and the training sailing ship "Gorch Fock" taking part.

The "Gorch Fock" will lead the entry parade on 13 August 2025 together with the patron of the Sail, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. You can watch the spectacle on the Weser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from the Seebäderkaje or the Havenwelten promenade, for example.

In addition to the "Gorch Fock", the frigate "Bayern" will also be exhibiting at the Sail in Bremerhaven. From 14 August 2025, the crew of the "Bayern" will be offering a "hands-on German Navy" experience every day from 11 am to 5 pm. From 15 August 2025, the German Navy sailing ship will open the Stelling to visitors to Bremerhaven Sail from 10 am to 6 pm.

During the Open Ship you can immerse yourself in the world of the marines on board.

Please note that visits on board the naval vessels are not barrier-free and dogs are not allowed on board.

Background information

Frigate "Bayern"

Since their commissioning, the four ships of the F123 class have primarily been used for submarine hunting. To this end, they can deploy both their bow sonar and two Sea Lynx helicopters each. These extend the submarine-hunting range of the ships with their diving sonar and torpedoes. With this main capability, the Brandenburg-class warships ideally complement the Class 124 frigates, whose main task is long-range air defence.

Sailing training ship "Gorch Fock"

The "Gorch Fock" is the navy's sail training ship. It is used for training officer cadets. During their basic maritime training on board, the cadets learn what teamwork means in practice. The ship can only be mastered by working together as a group, as much of the work on board relies solely on muscle power. Four helmsmen are needed to keep the "Gorch Fock" on course, for example, and dozens of cadets have to work on the so-called breasts to move the heavy yards.
