German Navy ready for multinational command tasks for national and alliance defence
On 17 May 2022 between 1 and 3 p.m., there will be a rare opportunity to look over the shoulder of the DEU MARFOR ("German Maritime Forces Staff") command staff in their situation centre to take a closer look at their mission and tasks. In this context, both the Admiralty and the functional personnel will be available to answer questions.
The "Griffin Marker 2022" exercise with 200 participants from 14 nations is coming to an end at the future naval command centre. This is an important milestone for DEU MARFOR towards certification as a maritime headquarters by NATO. The aim is to conduct maritime operations with a multinational staff and to have a constant picture of the situation. In times of crisis, NATO or the EU, for example, can activate the staff to command multinational naval units. For this purpose, there is an infrastructure on land or on seagoing units.
"Griffin Marker 2022" has a fictitious crisis scenario in the Baltic Sea region. This will be simulated in a two-and-a-half-week exercise. In addition to NATO partners, representatives from Sweden and Finland are also taking part, as has been customary in the past. The exercise is therefore very topical as a scenario in the Baltic Sea against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and the expected accession of the previously neutral states.
