The responsible mining authority in Stralsund has approved the second section and thus the entire 50 km long connection pipeline between the gas pipeline junction in Lubmin - east of the city of Greifswald - and Mukran in Sassnitz on the island of Rügen.
The pipeline will transport the liquefied natural gas delivered by ship to Mukran, where it will be regasified on so-called "FSRUs", to the hub in Lubmin, from where it will be fed into the long-distance gas grid. FSRU stands for Floating Storage and Regasification Unit. Two of these units are planned in Mukran: The "Neptune", which is currently still moored off Lubmin, and the "Transgas Power", which is chartered by the German government and operated by the German company ReGas GmbH.
Authorisations
The first section of the lake, which runs 26 kilometres from Lubmin through the Greifswald Bodden to the south-east coast of Rügen, was already approved in August 2023. The landing points in Lubmin and Mukran have also already been approved. The second section to the port of Mukran can now also be built.

Points of contention
The Bundestag and Bundesrat had decided to include the port of Mukran as a location for a liquefied natural gas terminal in the corresponding LNG Acceleration Act. This law enables faster approvals.
Critics speak of unneeded overcapacity and unknown risks for the environment and tourism, particularly for the Greifswald Bodden and the beaches in Binz. However, several associations had failed with urgent applications and an attempt to stop construction of the pipeline before the Federal Administrative Court (BVG) in Leipzig.
The federal government, on the other hand, considers the LNG terminal in Mukran to be necessary due to the security of energy supply and wants to put the terminal into operation this winter.
The BVG followed this reasoning on the grounds of energy supply security.
The procedures for the actual terminal in Mukran and the operation of the special ships, for which a different authorisation authority is responsible, are still ongoing ...
