Port of Hamburg: Western expansion

After Cosco (China) and the planned entry of MSC (Switzerland), the next investment in the port of Hamburg is apparently imminent. According to information from NDR, several large shipping companies have expressed their interest to Eurogate in participating in the major project, including at least two Asian shipping companies in addition to the French CMA CGM.

To this end, new areas for container handling and two new berths for large container ships are to be created in Hamburg-Waltershof as part of the western expansion. And significantly more space so that freighters can be turned when entering the harbour.

The City of Hamburg and Eurogate have been planning this port expansion for years. The city has had planning permission since summer 2022 because all legal proceedings have been concluded. However, according to current law, construction work must now begin within five years, according to Hamburg's Senator for Economic Affairs. The city is therefore in talks with terminal operator Eurogate to finalise the detailed plans.

A Eurogate spokesperson said that the company would not comment on the status of any ongoing talks. The company rejects speculation that concrete agreements have already been reached. There has been no official statement from CMA CGM, based in Hamburg's twin city Marseille, or from the Hamburg economic authorities.
