Project start German frigate MEKO A-200 DEU

Now that was quick! The "intentions" announced just a fortnight ago are being realised. No additional words are needed - read today's press release from TKMS:

Project start for MEKO A-200 frigates: TKMS and BAAINBw sign preliminary contract

The preliminary contract between TKMS and the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) enables the start of central preparatory measures.

The start of the preparatory measures is scheduled for February 2026.

The preliminary contract enables punctual delivery by 2029 if the actual construction contract is concluded promptly.

Koblenz, 3 February 2026

TKMS and the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) today signed a preliminary contract for the MEKO A-200 DEU project. The purpose of the preliminary contract is to enable the delivery of the first ship by the end of 2029 and to initiate central preparatory measures. The start of the preparatory measures is scheduled for February 2026.

Dr Oliver Juckenhöfel, Executive Vice President Surface Vessels at TKMS, explains: "The preliminary contract lays the foundation for the immediate project ramp-up. In particular, the contract enables us to procure materials and start steel work at the shipyard immediately."

The preliminary contract initially covers procurements and work totalling up to 50 million euros until the end of March. If necessary, there is also the option to extend the contract in stages.

The signing of the preliminary contract marks the official start of the MEKO A-200 DEU project. This is not yet associated with an official construction contract. The decision on this is still pending.

End of press release.
