On 3 February 2022, TKMS continued the shipyard trials of the first submarine of the 218SG class with shallow water trials of the RSS Invincible.
To this end, the 70 metre long AIP submarine, which displaces 2,200 tonnes when submerged, was moved to the Kiel Bay area for 11 hours before mooring again at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (tkms) in Kiel at night. According to observers, following successful tests, the next step on the programme is to move the submarine towards the Skagerrak, where the deep-water test section is to be completed.
RSS Invincible is the type boat of a class of four diesel-electric submarines with fuel cell propulsion that the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) ordered from TKMS in 2013 (boats 1 and 2) and 2017 (boats 3 and 4).
TKMS has previously carried out deep-water diving trials in the Skagerrak for other submarine classes, with the submarines and their shipyard-owned escort vessel logistically based in the Danish ports of Hirtshals and Frederikshavn.
The sister boat RSS Impeccable is the second submarine of the 218SG class at TKMS and is currently undergoing final harbour trials and is being prepared for sea trials.
Boat three (RSS Illustrious) and boat four (RSS Inimitable) are currently in the submarine construction hall in Kiel-Gaarden at different stages of construction.
The 218SG class submarines are currently the largest submarines ever built by TKMS.
It is expected that the first-in-class submarine will be delivered to the RSN in the course of the year.
